When distance d between MT and BP is such that d = nλ, the transmitting signal & the feedback signal are of same phase. As the cycle continues, signals of same phase constructively added to each other and produce a sinusoidal wave with high peaks.

When the distance d is such that d ≠ n λ, a phase difference is introduced between the transmitting signal and the feedback signal. As the wave travel back and forth, the phase difference increases subsequently weakening the superposed signal.
